Let's look after Indonesian Children!

Articles tanggal 31 Maret 2010

There are about 40,000 illiterate Indonesian children in Sabah, Malaysia. (Kompas.com -11th December 2009).   These are the children of foreign labourers in Sabah who work mainly in the plantation sector on oil palm or rubber estates, or in timber camps or mills.  These children receive no education at all, moreover they not competent in the Indonesian language.  These children have no access to the Malaysian education system and the costs for a private or international school are prohibitive.  Private schools range from RM 150- to over RM 1000 per month (about Rp. 413,000-Rp.2, 700.000).  This has been the plight of these children for years. Previous Efforts to assist these children The Malaysian education department permits only one legally registered Indonesian school in Sabah and that is the Kota Kinabalu Indonesian School (SIKK). SIKK has about 300 registered students.  Apart from that a European NGO has been providing basic education for the past few years mainly on the East Coast of Sabah for migrant labourers children (from the Philippines and Indonesia). But this is not enough. More efforts are needed to ensure all foreign children have access to education. ProVisi Education is also determined to assist these children and ensure they are provided with a basic education.  We have been invited by companies to work together in assisting them to provide learning centers for their workers children.  They have provided a place in their complex and we input a quality Indonesian educational program. ProVisi has launched a learning center in the Keningau region (about two hours drive from Kota Kinabalu) where more than 100 children aged 5-15 who have never been to school are now learning at our Community Development Center (CDC).  Our short term target is for these children to learn to read and write as well as understand basic numeracy skills and develop these skills so that at the end of primary 6 they are able to pass the Indonesian education system’s national examinations.  This is so that on their return to Indonesian they can continue at the SMP level and so on.  With more assistance we are going to open more community development centers like this and so give all children their right to an education.  Help Us! The financial cost to support a child at the CDC for one month is about RM 60.00 (about Rp. 165.000).  However, this cost would be reduced to RM 45 per month if the student at any one CDC was more than 200 students.  These school fees cover the teachers and consultants salaries, books for the students, teaching materials etc. At the moment the expenses are partly covered by the parents and partly from donations of various sources. Help us help them!  Whatever assistance you can give however small is very big for these our children. ProVisi Education will use 100% of all your donations and assistance for these children and also provide a financial statement of this program on line and as well to all who need it. Bank Account  : PROVISI MANDIRI PRATAMA 084 215 1919 Bank BCA Cabang Wisma Asia or Yayasan Lunar 117.000.544.777-6 Bank Mandiri Tomang Raya branch   Donation in the Form of Kind If you want to give a donation in the form of kind, we need stationery for writing and drawing, story books, teaching aids or media aids for teaching.  One of the biggest expenses for this type of collection is the high costs of transportation.  So we apologise that we cannot send any larger items than the ones listed above.  However, we will be very happy if you could arrange to send any items that maybe larger then the ones listed above. If you would like to donate goods please contact Robbi at ProVisi Education.  Contact: +62-21-5661017 (Robbi) to arrange the method of transport.
